Ahead of the November 3 elections in which millions of voters are expected to cast ballots by mail due to the coronavirus, Trump has leveled an unprecedented attack at the USPS, opposing efforts to give the cash-strapped agency more money as part of a big new virus-related stimulus package, even as changes there have caused delays in mail delivery. “This is unfortunate, but please be advised that the Post Service does not enter into decision to suspend service lightly,” the letter stated. “Multiple carriers have been subjected to assaults and threats of assault.”

Santa Monica authorities told NBCLA the bureau has not received any statements about the crimes from the Postal Service. The letter was sent to the attention of police Saturday when it was shared to Twitter, police said.

The headquarters located a crime report for an assault with a broomstick on a USPS mail carrier in the 1300 block of 14th Street in January. The mail carrier underwent a minor injury to his arm and did not require medical attention, law enforcement said.

Residents said the attacks and threats seem to involve one person. “He’s been violent, several times that we’ve seen,” said resident Jim Price.
