Authorities said 61-year-old Pamela Jane Rock’s vehicle broke down on the side of the road in the Lake Estates section of Interlachen. According to First Coast News, witnesses heard the woman screaming for help and went outside to assist her when they saw the five dogs attacking her near a broken fence. Several residents ran over to the scene and attempted to pull the dogs off, and one neighbor fired a shot into the ground to scare the animals away.
After learning about the woman’s death, the United States Postal Service released a statement, “A postal family member lost her life in a dog bite attack. The U.S. Postal Service is deeply saddened at the loss of our employee. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her co-workers at this time.” The dogs were taken into custody by Animal Control and will be euthanized.

The USPS also said their employees are trained to use their mail sachel as their first line of defense if a dog tries to attack them. Additionally, postal workers must carry pepper spray, and the carrier’s delivery scanner will send an alert to the post office.
Her niece told First Coast News that Rock’s limbs were amputated, and her heart stopped twice before death at a local hospital.
Social media addresses the attack and says the owners should be held responsible for the USPS worker’s death.
Due to the tragic nature of Rock’s death, many expressed their sorrow and anger on Twitter about the dogs not being restrained. Additionally, some believe the owners should be charged for Rock’s death as the broken fence could’ve been fixed.
