UPS Lifts Ban On Employees Wearing Natural Black Hairstyles & Facial Hair

After years of upholding strict rules around its delivery drivers’ personal appearance, UPS is ending their ban on employees wearing natural Black hairstyles and facial hair.

Prior to the ban’s lift, the delivery company ordered its employees to show up for work without facial hair (no beards, and small mustaches) and hairstyles (no braids, afros, natural styles allowed). Additionally, they banned any piercings that weren’t your usual earrings, and ordered tattoos to be hidden.

In a statement released, the company also said they’re loosening clothing restrictions, such as the length of the uniform’s shorts. “These changes reflect our values and desire to have all UPS employees feel comfortable, genuine and authentic while providing service to our customers and interacting with the general public.” The announcement ended with the company confirming their determination “to continue to make UPS a great place to work for all of our more than 5000,000 employees around the world.”

Furthermore, it’s stated that the decision was led by UPS CEO Carol Tomé, who “listened to feedback from employees and heard that changes in this area would make them more likely to recommend UPS as an employer.”
