The Kenosha Police Department explained in a news release that the officer-involved shooting happened about 5 pm near 40th and 28th Avenue as cops were responding to a “domestic incident.” Witnesses say the victim, Jacob Blake, 29, was simply breaking up a fight when cops were called to the scene. It’s unclear what unfolded from there, but the video that has gone viral captured the crucial 20 seconds. In the clip, three officers are seen shouting and pointing their weapons at Blake, who walked around a car in a nonthreatening manner. As he tried to get inside, one of the cops grabs hold of his shirt, and for some inexplicable reason, unloads seven rounds at arm’s length. The victim was flown to a hospital and has been listed as being in serious condition. According to NBC affiliate TMJ4, Blake’s family says children were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers issued a statement denouncing “excessive use of force” by police and in support of the man and his family; pledging in the coming days to demand action from state elected officials “who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”

“While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country,” Evers said.  “We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith.  And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites.”
