UPDATE: WHO Suspends Clinical Trials Of Hydroxychloroquine Over Safety Concerns

The World Health Organization is putting a pause on the testing of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus treatment.

The agency’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu shared this latest update on Monday while explaining that they’re going to review safety concern.

“The executive group has implemented a temporary pause of the hydroxychloroquine arm within the Solidarity trial while the safety data is reviewed by the data safety monitoring board. The other arms of the trial are continuing,” Ghebreyesus said in an online briefing.

Although the drug has been endorsed by a number of world leaders including Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro and US president Donald Trump — it’s known for its serious side effects, particularly heart arrhythmia. Still, the President has touted it a the coronavirus cure and shared on Sunday he had just finished a course of the medicine, which he claimed to have been taking as a preventative measure.
