UPDATE: Southern California High School Shooting Suspect Identified

A community in Southern California is left in shock after a student carried out the latest school shooting.

The suspect who’s responsible for this crime has been identified as Nathaniel Berhow. According to CNN, it was his 16th birthday on Thursday, the same day the shooting took place. Police said Nathaniel shot 5 of his classmates and then shot himself.

Berhow survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head and is currently in “grave condition,” which means he is critical and clinging to life, at an area hospital. However, two students have died from their wounds three others are still being treated.

Friends and family of Nathaniel, have said there in disbelief and would never think Nathaniel out of all people would do such a thing. Many of his friends described him as a kind and sweet guy, not “a quiet or a weird kid.” A close friend of the Asian student also said everything seemed normal after he went on a hike with him and four other guys the day before, “cracking jokes as usual.” However, some people did note that he appeared to be struggling since the death of his father in 2017 and leaned heavily on his mother and sister for support.

L.A. Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed Thursday that one of the victims who died in a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita was the family member of a Los Angeles Sheriff Department employee. Police also shared that the shooting was captured on surveillance video.

It is not clear if they plan to release the footage to the public. As of right now, a motive for this attack is unclear. We will continue to keep you updated when more details have been shared.
