Former city council member Galina Danilchenko was declared the acting mayor for Melitopol on Saturday. As previously reported, Mayor Ivan Fedorov was abducted from the city’s crisis center for allegedly failing to comply with Russian soldiers and was seen on security footage with a plastic bag covering his head surrounded by soldiers.
Danilchenko said in a televised speech that she planned to get the city back the normal despite Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky demanding Fedorov’s immediate release. “I ask you to keep your wits about you and not to give in to these provocations. I appeal to the deputies, elected by the people, on all levels. Since you were elected by the people, it is your duty to care about the well-being of your citizens,” she said in response to protests about the kidnapping.
