UPDATE: Police Chief Tim Gannon Also Quits In Wake Of Daunte Wright Shooting
Just shortly after it was announced that Kim Potter, the Minnesota officer who shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center Sunday resigned, it was reported that Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon also quit this Tuesday.
The news of Gannon was announced by Mayor Mike Elliot during a press conference. He said the city government had received notice of Gannon’s resignation. The mayor also announced that he had appointed Tony Gruenig as the acting chief of police in the city of 30,000. The new chief who has worked for the department for 19 years, said that he hopes that he could create “community calming” in Brooklyn Center.
“I am trying to step forward and fulfill a leadership role right now. It is very chaotic right now,” he said.
As we previously reported, Wright, 20, was shot and killed by now-former officer Potter on Sunday afternoon, after he had been stopped over expired tags on his car. Officials say that the police officer had meant to use her taser weapon to control Wright, but instead grabbed her handgun and shot him once.
During an intense conference on Monday, the former police chief called the shooting accidental and walked out before being brought back by the mayor to answer more questions.
