As we previously reported, Melania Geymonat shared that she and her girlfriend were traveling home on the top deck of a London night bus to Camden Town, in the early hours of May 30 when a group of guys asked them to kiss each other. Geymonat said even joked with them and told them she was sick, thinking it would make the guys stop harassing them. However, it didn’t help at all.

According to Geymonat, the situation then escalated and the men started beating them. “Suddenly the bus had stopped, the police were there and I was bleeding all over,” she wrote on Facebook. The teens ran away and a phone and bag were stolen during the assault, police said. Both women were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries and later released.

In an update on Friday, police said they nabbed four suspects for robbery and aggravated hate crime. They were taken to separate police stations for further questioning. Police said another boy, 16, was arrested Saturday. Police were reviewing CCTV footage of the attack and continued to appeal for witnesses and information.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan labeled the incident “a disgusting, misogynistic attack. Hate that hate crimes against gay people will not be tolerated in London, he said. As the couplets story spread through social media, many people around the world tweeted positive message to express solidarity, with many also explaining “this is why we still pride.”
