Update: ‘Golden State Killer’ Joseph DeAngelo Sentenced To Life In Prison, Avoids Death Penalty

Former police officer and serial killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, aka the “Golden State Killer” was sentenced on Friday to multiple consecutive terms of life without parole for murdering and raping at least 13 people.

DeAngelo, 74, will die in prison for his heinous crimes in Sacramento.

“By listening to the survivors, I’ve watched you. I could not help but wonder what you’re thinking,” Judge Michael Bowman said to DeAngelo during sentencing. “Are you capable of comprehending the pain and anguish you have caused?”

DeAngelo didn’t stir as the verdict was read. However, prior to being sentencing after hours-long statements from victims’ families, he stood up and spoke.

“I’ve listened to all your statements. Each one of them. “And I’m really sorry to everyone I’ve hurt. Thank you, your honor.”

DeAngelo pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder stemming back to the 1970s. He is believed to be responsible for many more rapes and murders.

“The court approves this plea. However, the court is not saying that Mr. DeAngelo doesn’t deserve to have the death penalty imposed,” added Bowman. “Mr. DeAngelo will spend the rest of his natural life and ultimately meet his death confined behind the walls of a state penitentiary.”
