According to Gator’s Twitter account, which shared an update, that’s exactly what happened, with Johnson able to follow “simple commands” following the coma. Another development for Johnson was being transferred from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee, where his Gators were playing a rivalry game against the Seminoles on Saturday, to UF Health in Gainesville, where the University of Florida is located.

Larry DeJarnett, Johnson’s grandfather, told USA Today sports, “He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma. “They put him on medication to keep him sedated.”

As we previously reported, Johnson had just finished an alley-oop dunk when Florida State called a quick timeout. Moments later, Johnson fell to the floor. The Southeastern Conference’s preseason player of the year, was taken off the floor on a stretcher and hospitalized shortly after. It was noted by TMZ that Johnson had tested positive for COVID this past summer. It appears one of the side effects was myocarditis … inflammation of the heart muscle.

The team is scheduled to host North Florida on Wednesday. Spokesperson Denver Parler told ESPN in regards to whether or not the contest will go on as scheduled: “Not sure what tomorrow or Wednesday will bring.”
