UPDATE: Derek Chauvin Just Invoked His 5th Amendment Right To Maintain Silence And Not Testify

This Thursday, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin said in court that he will not testify in his murder trial.

“I will invoke my Fifth Amendment privilege” to not risk making any self-incriminating statements in Hennepin County District Court, where he is charged with killing George Floyd late last spring in Minneapolis.

The fate of Derek Chauvin is expected to be in the hands of the jury in a matter of days, with the defense expected to rest its case Thursday. However, before resting its case, the defense will be calling another witness up to the stand. Then, the state may call rebuttal witnesses. The jury could get the case next week. For Chauvin to be convicted of the most serious charge, prosecutors will have to show beyond a reasonable doubt that he caused Floyd’s death when he held his knees to Floyd’s neck and back.

As we previously reported, on May 25, 2020, Chauvin pinned Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, by the neck with his knee for nine minutes and 29 seconds after responding to a call that Floyd allegedly used a counterfeit $20 bill to buy a pack of cigarettes at a local convenience store.
