“We have had a mass shooting in this country virtually every day this year and I’m afraid we’re becoming numb to it,” Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., said on MSNBC on Thursday. “I’m afraid that we are behaving as if this is normal. This is not normal, to live in a country where no one is safe, no matter where they are.”
In a statement posted to Twitter Thursday, the federal agency also addressed the shooting saying, “CDC is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of a colleague killed yesterday in the Midtown Atlanta shooting. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and colleagues as they remember her and grieve this tragic loss.”
The suspects mother, Minyone Patterson, spoke with WANF and issued out an apology to all of the victims and revealed that her son suffers from mental illness.
“This mental illness is real, and when we say it’s real, from the medical standpoint, it is real,” Minyone Patterson said. “And when someone is saying they need help, or you see that they are acting out of sorts, they need help. Help them, just don’t disregard them. They need help, and as I’m trying to advocate for my son he was turned away. Just be careful.”
In a call with The Daily Beast, Minyone Patterson stated that her son was on medication, saying, “The damn VA gave him some messed up medication. And all he wanted was an Ativan,” before hanging up the phone.
