Universal Pictures Greenlights Britney Spears Biopic With Director Jon M. Chu

Universal has secured the rights to Britney Spears‘ memoir, “The Woman In Me,” with director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt set to develop the feature film.

Britney Spears confirmed the news in a post on X(formerly Twitter) and expressed her excitement about working with Platt: “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned. In a report by Variety, Universal won the rights to the memoir, which was released last October and has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States alone. In her book, the pop star provides a candid account of her rise to fame, from her days on “The Mickey Mouse Club” to her widely publicized and scrutinized conservatorship battle.

The honest memoir also dives deep into her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake and her family. Universal Pictures is also developing a biopic on Snoop Dogg and a film inspired by Prince’s music, produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media. Another project based on Pharell’s life was recently wrapped up and will be released in October.

Chu and Platt are working on the film adaption of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The first part of the adaption is set to release in theatres on November 22, 2024, with “Wicked Part Two” slated for November 26, 2024.

Since the news of the biopic, Spears’ fans have been speculating about who should portray the pop princess accurately.
