UNC-Chapel Hill Switches To Virtual Learning After 130 Students Test Positive For COVID-19
As 130 students and 5 faculty members test positive for COVID-19, UNC-Chapel Hill officials are switching from in-person instruction to virtual learning, effective August 19.
On Sunday, results, revealing the spike, came back from tests taken beginning on Monday. Subsequently, the school tweeted out, “After consultation with state and local health officials, #UNC’s infectious disease experts and the @ UNC_System, Carolina is making two changes to de-densify campus. First: On Wednesday, Aug. 19, all undergraduate instruction will shift to remote learning.”

Meanwhile, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz blames off-campus activities for the surge in numbers, just one week into the fall semester. He tells WRAL, “We had a good road map that we developed. When activities began to happen off campus and then bringing some of that back into the residence halls, that’s where we began to see the positive cases and we were surprised at the velocity and the magnitude of the spread.”
