OMG! An unarmed 70-year-old correctional officer at a St. Louis, Missouri jail was held hostage by inmates, and ended up being injured, by prisoners demanding “pizza and chicken patties.” Apparently, the inmates were tired of being served cold food and wanted more hot food options.
Last week, St. Louis Public Safety Director Charles Coyle Sr. told the media that two inmates at the jail had taken a male corrections officer hostage around 6 a.m. local time at the city’s Justice Center, during breakfast time on Tuesday (August 22). Adding further detail, Corrections Commissioner Jennifer Clemons-Abdullah told reporters that the two inmates were demanding pizza and chicken patties.
Around 8:17 a.m., about an hour after police requested them, the department’s SWAT team entered the jail and shortly after that they recovered the officer, who they claimed had minor injuries and needed to be transported to a local area hospital. The safety director also noted that the early morning hours could have prevented the SWAT team from entering into the jail earlier.
The safety director also said that officials absolutely intend on bringing criminal charges against the inmates; however, he declined to explicitly detail what charges the city would be looking to bring against the prisoners involved. It’s also noted that the two inmates involved had disciplinary issues prior to the big incident.
Additionally, it’s reported that the unarmed and unnamed 70-year-old correctional officer that was held hostage by the inmates is said to have been employed at the department for five years.
Meanwhile, the corrections commissioner stated that her department has improved on the food served to detainees. She claimed that officials have the vendor look at the nutritional value of the food and they have been slowly implementing changes. She also said that food is often served in double portions, and officials did not see any issues with what is currently being served to inmates.
Other details noted reveal that the city’s Justice Center currently holds about 675 people as of Tuesday. It’s further noted that about 93 percent of the inmates housed there are all men.
