A Ukrainian woman was shot and killed as she tried to save dogs that were abandoned during the invasion.

The shooting took place while Anastasiia Yalanskaya was delivering dog food to a local shelter in Bucha, a town outside of Kyiv when she was shot by Russian soldiers. The young woman might have been intentionally targeted by members of the Russian military, and two other volunteers were killed. The attack occurred while she was sitting in her car after delivering the food.

“I asked her to be extra cautious. That nowadays, a mistake costs extremely much. But she was helping everyone around. I asked her to think of evacuation but she did not listen. She was one of the best human beings I knew. She was committed to help, to help her friends and relatives and whoever needed help. She loved animals. We had a dog and a cat. She was the best partner I ever had,” her husband, Yevhen Yalanskyi, said in a statement. A friend of the couple said Yalanskaya’s body still remains in a morgue but no one can claim her remains due to the intense conflict of the war.
