Tyrese first made headlines this week after news broke of him filing a lawsuit against Home Depot for more than $1 million. In his legal filing he claimed that he was racially profiled while visiting a store back on February 11, 2023. On Wednesday (August 9), Tyrese filed his lawsuit in a Los Angeles Superior Court.
The singer claimed that when he visited his local Home Depot store in West Hills, he and two associates of his (his construction workers Eric Mora and Manual Hernandez) were racially profiled by employees. Tyrese stayed back in the car while his associates went into the store, out of fear his fame would be a distraction inside the store. However, the singer ended up having to go inside anyway when a cashier refused to complete his associates’ transaction without reason.

In his suit, it reads, “[Tyrese] one of the most recognizable Black actors and musicians in the United States, and his associates … experienced outrageous discriminatory mistreatment and consumer racial profiling first-hand inside the Home Depot retail store in West Hills. The company needs to understand that there are consequences for discriminatory mistreatment and consumer racial profiling.”
The suit continued, “[The cashier] gave no reasonable explanation other than repeating store policy and demanded to see a form of identification.” The manager reportedly refused to speak to Tyrese, then the cashier ended up completing the transaction following a heated argument. The complaint said, “There is no other plausible explanation for the mistreatment of plaintiffs,” and since they’ve alleged that all plaintiffs have “suffered shame, humilation and mental suffering.”
The suit, which seeks compensatory and punitive damages, also claims “negligent hiring, supervision and retention.”
Since this news, Tyrese has now responded to people claiming he’s always playing victim. Aside from this Home Depot headline, Tyrese has also been caught up in a nasty divorce and child support battle with his ex-wife Samantha Lee Gibson.
Taking to his Instagram Story early Saturday morning (August 12), Tyrese said he does not always play victim, nor is he above an apology. He began, “Deeply annoyed by people who create negative and toxic environments and yet run and play victim. Not only do they play victim but they play the innocent victim.”
He continued, “Here’s my memo to the world my life started off on unBEARable level that I have been very vocal about but one things for sure I don’t PLAY VICTIM and when things are 100% my fault? I will not only attempt to clarify my intention but I will apologize over and over and over…. not expecting you to agree but I am NOT above an apology and I don’t play victim… And if you disagree? Tyrese sent another post and said, “Just a got a random call about some goofy shit and I swear I’m deeply annoyed… If these annoying AF people were even worth it i would call out their names… Jeez. Say what you say… I’m here for a reason! 1 don’t do fake humble I’m a KING and I intimidate most from just my sheer presence alone….
