According to police in Texas, two “so-called friends” took turns shooting at each other with a rifle while wearing a Kevlar helmet, which ended with one man now being charged with murder.

While describing the unusual incident, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez calls the circumstances “hard to believe.” He further claimed “so-called friends” Sean Odonnell, 37, and Aaron Prout, 34, allegedly took turns shooting at each other. He said they took turns using a rifle as the other wore a Kevlar helmet.

The incident was initially reported to police as a suicide. However, authorities noted that things did not add up upon further investigation. Sheriff Gonzalez said the incident occurred on August 17 and that four deputies responded to a home in a residential neighborhood. Upon arrival at the Pennington Hills Drive address, deputies located a man with a gunshot wound to the head.

Man Charged With Murder After He And Another Man Took Turns Shooting Each Other While The Other Wore A Kevlar Helmet

The man was rushed to a local hospital, but died from his injuries sustained. Police identified the victim as Aaron Prout. They said he was originally from the United Kingdom, but resided in Harris County. Police then identified the homeowner as Sean Odonnell. Authorities initially investigated him as part of the possible suicide.

However, on August 28, one week and one day after the incident, Harris County Sheriff’s Office detectives charged Odonnell. He was charged with the alleged murder of he British national living in Texas. This was after they learned that the two men took turns shooting each other with a rifle while wearing a Kevlar helmet.

Odonnell was booked in the Harris County Jail and is being held on a $300,000 bond. He is scheduled to see a judge again on September 2. At this time, it is not clear if he has entered a plea or retained legal defense.

Taking to X, Sheriff Gonzalez posted on his official account with an advisory. He wrote:

“Hard to believe two, so-called friends, would take turns shooting at each other wearing a kevlar helmet, inside a house in a residential neighborhood, while using a rifle. On 8/17/25, Pct 4 deputies responded to a call for service at the 23700 blk of Pennington Hills Drive.

Upon arrival, units found an adult male who sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, but subsequently died from his injuries. The victim was identified as Aaron Prout (34) from the United Kingdom, who resided in Harris County. The homeowner was identified as Sean Odonnell (10-22-87).

On 8/28/25, @HCSOTexas detectives charged Odonnell with the alleged Murder of Aaron Prout and booked in the Harris County Jail. VCAT assisted with the arrest. Kudos to HCSO CSI Ward, Detectives Craig, Davis, and Sgt. Miller’s team. Incident initially came in as a possible suicide, but things weren’t adding up. With thorough follow-up investigation, the truth was ultimately revealed.”
