The quest for the ultimate selfie can sometimes lead to devastating consequences, and tragically that was the result for two influencers. According to The Sun, Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, sadly lost their lives off the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil last month and now police are urging the public to avoid this same mistake.
On September 29th, the duo was aboard an overcrowded yacht in a notorious area known as the Devil’s Throat, a stretch of coast famous for its treacherous waves and strong currents. Reports indicate that the yacht was already over its limit, with a maximum capacity of five passengers, yet the captain was ordered to take on six influencers.
As the boat navigated the turbulent waters, a sudden wave struck, causing the vessel to capsize. In the frantic moments that followed, Aline and Beatriz reportedly refused to wear life jackets, believing that the safety gear would compromise their ability to take selfies. Sao Vicente police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino revealed the shocking rationale behind their decision: “Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies. They said that they get in the way of their tanning.” The tragic choice ultimately cost them their lives.
The aftermath of the accident saw five other survivors, including Vanessa Audrey da Silva, who managed to secure a life jacket and clung to rocks until rescue arrived, the news outlet notes. Beatriz’s body was recovered from the sea shortly after the incident, while Aline’s body washed ashore on October 4th.
As investigations continue, the police are now trying to determine whether the deaths were the result of recklessness or negligence. Commissioner Alfino stated, “All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence.” The scrutiny on the yacht’s skipper and the decision to exceed the capacity limit will be the focus in unraveling the specifics of this tragedy.
