NYPD officers reported that the two children, a girl, and a boy, are cousins and decided to drive off in a vehicle from Queens around 10 a.m. After taking the vehicle, the pair reportedly drove more than 100 miles and were discovered after they used one of their parents’ credit cards to make a purchase at a rest stop near the New Jersey/Delaware border. Delaware River and Bay Authority officers stopped the cousins after they drove over a bridge and bypassed a toll.

The circumstances leading up to taking the vehicle for a ride are unknown but local sources state the boy allegedly told police it was a part of a “social media” challenge where you drive the vehicle until it runs out of gas.

During an interview with police, the girl said she had a “good time” while her cousin drove the vehicle. A neighbor called the boy who drove the vehicle a “nice kid” and told New York CBS Local, “I’ve seen him. He just sits there at home with his family. I’m very happy that he’s back.”

Currently, no arrests or charges have been made but an investigation is pending.
