Not in the mood or just coming to terms with his new reality!? Donald Trump has plans to skip the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate, which will take place in the coming days in Milwaukee, according to sources familiar with the event.
Trump confirmed Sunday he will not participate in the debate this week in a post on his platform, Truth Social. He said, Stating that the public already “knows who I am,” Trump wrote on his social media platform: “I will therefore not be doing the debates!”
Now this doesn’t come as a shock since Trump has indicated for weeks in interviews and on social media that he didn’t plan to participate in the first GOP debate. In a Thursday post to his Truth Social account, Trump questioned why he would even show up to a debate if poll numbers showed that he was already “leading the runner up, whoever that may now be” by a considerable amount.
The ex-president’s confirmation of his debate plans comes just days after a New York Times report revealed Trump agreed to instead sit with Tucker Carlson for an interview.
This is not the first time Trump has chosen to skip a major GOP debate. He decided to do so for the final GOP primary face-off before the Iowa caucuses during his 2016 campaign. Instead held his own campaign event in Iowa.
More On Mr Trump
Trump, who received 47% support among Republican voters in the latest poll conducted by Reuters on Aug. 2-3, has more serious things to worry about. As we previously reported, he is facing federal and Georgia state charges over his role in efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, as well as others related to his retention of important and sensitive government documents after leaving office, and alleged hush-money payments to porn star, Stormy Daniels. It’s his fourth indictment so far.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D), who led this latest investigation, has said he will have until noon on Friday to turn themselves in, meaning Trump’s surrender could take place on the day of the Milwaukee debate, according to a person close to the former president.
