Gov. Jared Polis’ office confirmed the news on Thursday and said Aguilera-Mederos will be eligible for parole in five years. “The length of your 110-year sentence is simply not commensurate with your actions, nor with penalties handed down to others for similar crimes. There is an urgency to remedy this unjust sentence and restore confidence in the uniformity and fairness of our criminal justice system, and consequently, I have chosen to commute your sentence now,” Polis wrote in a communal letter to Aguilera-Mederos.

Kim Kardashian also thanked Gov. Polis for taking action and reducing the young man’s sentence, saying the case was a “clear example of why mandatory minimums don’t work and need to be abolished.”

Originally, Aguilera-Mederos,26, was sentenced to serve 110 years in prison for a crash that killed four people in 2019. During his hearing, he said the brakes failed as he was driving 85 mph and attempted to pull over on the shoulder. However, another semi-truck also stopped in the same area. He was found guilty in October and convicted for vehicular homicide and other charges as per ABC13 Houston.
