A Nevada transgender woman has made history in the state as she is the first to win the 2021 Miss Nevada USA title on Sunday.

Kataluna Enriquez won the competition against 21 other contestants and became the first transgender woman in pageant history to win. In the following Instagram post, Enriquez thanked her supporters with an accompanying photo of a rainbow dress in honor of Pride Month. “Huge thank you to everyone who supported me from day one. My community, you are always in my heart. My win is our win. We just made history. Happy Pride,” she wrote.
According to Yahoo! News, Enriquez endured many obstacles in her life that led up to the competition as written by Silver State USA’s Instagram page. “As a survivor of physical and sexual abuse and a proud Transwoman of color, she aims to break barriers and represent those who aren’t always represented and continues to support numerous non-profit organizations and LGBTQ+ youth,” it reads.

Enriquez is expected to compete in November for the Miss USA title.
