TikTok Reaches 1 Billion Monthly Users Globally

TikTok has reached more than 1 billion monthly active users worldwide after the social media app saw a 45 percent rise since August 2020.

The platform’s milestone was confirmed in a video Monday uploaded by TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas who said “over a billion people from around the world come to TikTok to be entertained, inspired or discover something new, like sports, music, arts and culture, fashion, DIY and more. Pappas added, “That’s one billion people watching and sharing each other’s creativity. So on behalf of the TikTok team, I want to say thank you.”

According to Variety, the app gained popularity as the successor to Musica.ly after it was acquired by ByteDance in 2017 and moved its users to the platform in 2018. The biggest markets for the app are the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Southeast Asia.

The app faced uncertainty last year after former President Donald Trump tried to permanently ban the app from the United States unless ByteDance sold the majority of TikTok to American properties. However, President Joe Biden overturned the order earlier this summer.
