Three National Guard members were killed after a military helicopter crashed in New York Wednesday evening.

Authorities reported the members were traveling in a UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter on a routine mission when it crashed in Mendon around 6:30 p.m. The members were traveling from the Army Aviation Support Facility at Rochester International Airport and the National Guard reported the chopper belonged to the C Company of the 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Battalion.

A statement was released by Gov. Andrew Cuomo who expressed his condolences to the soldiers’ families and loved ones who were affected by the tragedy.

“National Guard members are our citizen-soldiers who voluntarily serve and protect both here and abroad, and I extend prayers and condolences from all New Yorkers to the family, loved ones and fellow soldiers of these honorable heroes who we will never forget,”

The cause of the crash is currently unknown but witnesses said they saw the chopper flying low moments before.
