Dang! After just one season, The Weeknd‘s HBO series ‘The Idol,’ which stars the “Starboy” singer and Johnny Depp‘s daughter Lily-Rose Depp, has officially been canceled. It is reported that the controversial series from ‘Euphoria‘ creator Sam Levinson, Reza Fahim, and The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, will not be returning for a second season after dropping its last episode on July 2.

Unfortunately, the news does not come as too much of a surprise, being that ‘The Idol‘ faced serious critical and commercial reception. However, it is reported that the news of the cancelation arrives after extensive reshoots of the show, following the exit of its director Amy Seimetz.

In April 2022, Deadline revealed the update and said that the director’s exit was to blame for the show reducing its order, taking its total number of episodes from an initially-promoted six to five. At the end of the series, it caused some confusion to viewers who didn’t catch the memo; leading them to believe that the show had received so much negative feedback and criticism that they subsequently got an early cancel. However, that was not exactly the case.

Now, before the one-and-done HBO series got canceled, some of the cast did mention the possibility of a second season during their promotional interviews. However, it is now being reported that the show’s creators just didn’t come into the production process with a plan for multiple seasons.

It’s further noted that there was a lack of clarity for both viewers and cast members on whether the series even had the potential to continue. While one of the stars, Moses Sumney — who played “Izaak,” a follower of The Weeknd’s character “Tedros” — says he signed onto the project thinking it was just a limited series.

Meanwhile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph — who played “Destiny,” one of the managers to Lily-Rose Depp’s pop star character “Jocelyn” — previously said that the first season of the series was intentionally left open-ended for the possibility of a second season.

While speaking with Deadline in May, she said, “I absolutely think there’s a season two. I’m not saying it’s official, but there’s definitely a whole vast world that could be developed. Absolutely, I’d come back for season two.”

Now following the previously-teased hopes for a second season, an HBO spokesperson now says, “‘The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
