Michelle Obama posted a photo of Bo on her official Instagram page with the caption, “On the campaign trail in 2008, we promised our daughters that we would get a puppy after the election. At the time, Bo was supposed to be a companion for the girls. We had no idea how much he would mean to all of us.” She added how Bo was present for all events which included the Pope’s visit to the White House and watching Sasha and Malia leaving their home to start a new life as college students.

Former President Barack Obama also confirmed the sad news on his Twitter page, calling Bo a “true friend and companion.”

“For more than a decade, Bo was a constant, gentle presence in our lives—happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and everyday in between”

Bo was one of the two Portuguese Waterdogs that were purchased by the Obamas since the girls are allergic to dogs and Bo and Sunny’s breed is hypoallergenic, meaning their hair doesn’t shed.
