While sitting with host Jason Lee, DDG recalls his childhood and growing up poor in Pontiac, Michigan. Although many consider it a small town, DDG claims it’s rough and like a tiny Detroit, which is about 40 minutes away. The rapper grew up with his parents sheeparated and lived mostly with his mother.

Speaking on his hard times with his family, DDG says he was raised poor, living without hot water in the house at one point. Despite growing up this way, DDG says he was a stellar student and chose not to get caught up in street life. He says he got good grades, had all the girls, played sports, and didn’t need the streets, even though his friends were in gangs.

DDG also opens up about losing his older brother to gun violence. He says it was very hard to get through it because they were super close and nearly acted like a father figure, teaching him how to drive, etc. The rapper explains how all of these circumstances and trials that he went through motivated him to build a better life for himself and his family, especially his mother who was working two jobs, including a gig at Rite Aid, where she was constantly robbed at gunpoint.

Taking matters into his own hands, DDG began getting into content creation, which he claims he’s naturally good at. He tells host Jason Lee that when his brother passed, the family received donations, leaving his mom asking if he wanted a car or camera as a gift. he chose the camera and hasn’t looked back since. With his first YouTube uploads, he immediately went viral.

DDG reveals that he initially gained fame online for doing video reactions like his viral video reacting to Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda.” The young YouTuber only had about 300 subscribers and got tens of thousands of views in hours. DDG, who had already been writing songs since 7, would also record and post diss tracks, targeting rappers like Lil Yachty — however, he clarifies to Lee that it was him strictly clout chasing to go viral and make money. He would get about 5 to 10 million views.

The rapper, who was around 19 at the time, recalls buying a huge Cuban chain and moving to Los Angeles off of his first big YouTube check, which was about $30,000. He says he moved in with then-girlfriend Rubi Rose, landed one of his first major hits with Los Angeles rapper Blueface, and things have been great since.

Breaking his silence on his secret baby with girlfriend, singer and actress Halley Bailey, DDG talks about the viral April Fools’ Day sonogram post. He notes that he really did just play a joke on fans and found the image on Google. However, one thing that’s not a joke is their relationship, no matter how hard critics try to break them up and claim Bailey’s too good for him.

While addressing the haters and people who have criticized their relationship, like Amanda Seales, DDG slams them and calls her a “clout chaser.” The rapper says despite his profession and past relationships, Bailey has been a breath of fresh air and that there is an unfair expectation for who she should date. Together, the two don’t care about the criticism.

When asked about their secret baby, DDG reveals that the two of them weren’t aiming for a baby, it just happened. He says they tried to keep their pregnancy under wraps because it’s very sensitive, but they were almost caught by paparazzi while walking to a doctor’s appointment.

The rapper also says that having a baby is fun and cool, especially being able to watch them grow every day, and he’s definitely wanting more kids. For DDG, he was super present for Bailey, going to doctor’s appointments, being in the delivery room, and even helping pull the baby’s head out of her womb. DDG admits that during the delivery he was scared when doctors put a needle in her hand and drew “tons of blood.”
