Royal Caribbean International is set to launch a new cruise ship called Icon of the Seas, which has been dubbed the world’s largest cruise ship and labeled as a “monstrosity” by critics. Measuring at a staggering 1,198 feet long and weighing 250,800 tonnes, it is five times larger than the Titanic, according to reports. The Icon of the Seas boasts 20 decks, seven swimming pools, and record-breaking six waterslides.
Furthermore, the ship features a 55-foot waterfall, a Mediterranean restaurant, and a five-deck high open-air park with real plants. And if that wasn’t enough, it also has multiple swimming pools and a large waterpark called “Category 6.” Ticket reservations for the Icon of the Seas opened in October 2022, with prices starting at $1,537 per person, while the ship is set to be operational in January 2024 and will hold around 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew.

The world’s largest cruise ship is not without its critics though. Some people have called it a “monstrosity,” comparing it to the Titanic and raising concerns about its size, environmental impact, and safety. However, Royal Caribbean International has emphasized that the Icon of the Seas is designed with the latest technology to ensure safety and environmental sustainability. The ship is powered by liquefied natural gas and fuel cell technology, making it one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships in the world.
Despite criticisms, pre-sales for the Icon of the Seas have been strong. The ship has eight neighborhoods to explore and offers over 40 dining, entertainment, and relaxation options. It promises to be a luxurious experience for passengers who can afford to splurge on its sky-high prices.
However, some people still remember the tragedy of the Titanic sinking in 1912 and a recent incident involving the sinking of the Titanic submarine in 2023. Critics argue that building such a massive vessel is tempting fate and that safety should be the top priority when designing cruise ships.
The Icon of the Seas has a variety of cabin categories, including balconies, suites, oceanviews, and inside cabins. It also features new cabin categories such as Panoramic Ocean View and Infinite Balcony. The ship will feature eight neighborhoods, each offering different experiences and catering to different audiences. There will also be five brand-new neighborhoods, including AquaDome, which will offer ocean views and aqua shows. Three signature neighborhoods from previous ship classes will also be included.
