A police officer in Texas accidentally shot and killed a woman that he was sent out to help.

The unidentified officer from Arlington was sent to check on a woman who was passed out around 5 p.m.

“As the officer called out to the woman repeatedly concerning her welfare, the dog began to run toward the officer while barking,” police said. “The officer retreated backwards from the running dog while drawing his duty firearm. The officer discharged his firearm multiple times toward the dog.”

According to The NY Post, the woman apparently screamed and further investigation showed that she had been hit by the shots that were aimed for the dog.

She has been identified as Margarita Brooks, a 30-year-old woman who was allegedly homeless. Police are currently investigating the shooting that was captured by the officer’s body camera. The dog survived the gunfire.

Police did not state whether the officer was placed on administrative leave or why Brooks was passed out in the first place.
