Texas Supreme Court Orders Release Of Jailed Salon Owner

The Texas Supreme Court on has ordered Dallas County officials to release salon owner, Shelley Luther who was arrested for keeping her business open despite Coronavirus restrictions.

The emergency order instructs that Luther be released on a personal bond with no money required, “pending final disposition of her case.”

The order comes after Luther’s case caught the attention of Governor Greg Abbott. The new order will prohibit officials from jailing Texans who violate any coronavirus-related orders.

“Throwing Texans in jail who have had their businesses shut down through no fault of their own is nonsensical, and I will not allow it to happen,” Abbott said. “That is why I am modifying my executive orders to ensure confinement is not a punishment for violating an order.”

While in court Wednesday, Luther was offered three choices by the judge, she could either apologize for her actions, pay a fine and shut down until Friday, or do time in prison, however she did not agree.

“I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I’m selfish because feeding my kids is not selfish,” she said to the judge. “I have hairstylists that are going hungry because they would rather feed their kids. So sir, if you think the law is more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision. But I am not going to shut the salon.”
