It looks like Ted Cruz can’t take the heat! The Republican Texas Senator had joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott to be with hundreds of tearful relatives and friends mourning loved ones killed in the Tuesday school shooting, the worst in U.S. history.

As we previously reported, nineteen children and two of their teachers at Robb Elementary School, Uvalde, Texas, were killed by 18-year-old Salvador Ramos. He also shot his grandmother before carrying out the attack. She is still fighting for her life. Ramos had bought the guns and 375 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition legally a week before, just days after his 18th birthday.

A new video that is circulating online shows the moment British journalist Mark Stone is interviewing Cruz at the vigil and asked him questions about gun laws in America. When the journalist appropriately asked why American exceptionalism is “so awful’” Cruz said: “You know, I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful. You’ve got your political agenda. God loves you.” The journalist then said to Cruz, “You can’t answer that?” Cruz replied: “Why is it that people come from all over the world to America? Because it’s the freest, most prosperous, safest country on Earth. Stop being a propagandist.”

Bothered by the question, Cruz told Sky News, “Inevitably, when some violent psychopath murders people, if you want to stop violent crime, the proposals the Democrats have — none of them would have stopped this.” He added: “There are 19 sets of parents who are never going to get to kiss their child tonight.” From there, the Texas senator stormed out of the interview at the vigil.

The video that was published this Thursday comes just a day after Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic candidate for Texas governor, confronted Gov. Greg Abbott during a news conference Wednesday over the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead. O’Rourke told Abbott the shooting was “totally predictable” and that he was “doing nothing.”

Cruz, who had narrowly defeated O’Rourke in 2018 in a Senate race, also shouted him down on Wednesday. “Sit down and don’t pull this stunt,” Cruz said.

Following that intense moment, Abbott addressed the interruption saying, “There are family members crying as we speak. There are family members whose hearts are broken. There’s no words that anybody shouting can come up here and do anything to heal those broken hearts. Every Texan, every American has a responsibility,” the governor said. “We need to focus not on ourselves and our agendas, we need to focus on the healing and hope that we can provide to those who have suffered unconscionable damage to their lives and loss of lives.”
