Since the incident, the Texas man has been arrested and charged with the fatal incident. He was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday (January 31), by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.s

Per the authorities, Showers, the victim, approached a vehicle sitting in the 900 block of Northwood Street in the early morning hours of May 29. Police say Showers was eventually found dead in a ditch with multiple bullet wounds, and his phone under his lifeless body. They later learned that he had planned to meet up with someone at Montie Beach Park. Police say surveillance footage in the area shows that a car drove up to the area around 3:50 a.m., stopped, and within four seconds, let off their firearm numerous times, with an “automatic-like” sound, and then sped off.

Rehaman Merchant, Chief Prosecutor for the 179th District Court, said, “(Spencer and Showers) were communicating using a social media app [called Kik]. The communications were sexual in nature. The officers believe that they were meeting up at this park to engage in sexual activity. There are some communications on the phones or between the two about (Showers’) dealings or past interactions with children or underage individuals.”

Before his death, in 2009, Showers pleaded guilty to possession of materials related to child sexual harm. Federal authorities said that Showers was sentenced to 30 months in prison and then sentenced to two years in 2019 for failing to register as a sex offender, as reported by ABC 13.

According to ABC 13, Houston Police Department officials said that Spencer allegedly posed as a child online, in an attempt to lure Showers under the guise of sex, as he believed the victim was a sex offender. A judge has since set Spencer’s bond at $250,000 and will require him to be on house arrest if he is released. He is due back in court on February 5.

Rehaman Merchant also said that Spencer set up a meeting and knew exactly where Showers was going to be on the night of his death. He added, “Regardless of the likability of the victim, we’re a nation of laws. So no one gets to be judge, jury, and executioner depending on how they feel.”
