Harold Thompson,22, fatally shot his 26-year-old girlfriend, Gabriella Gonzalez, at a parking lot in West Oak Cliff a day after she returned from traveling to have the medical procedure. The Dallas Police Department said in an arrest affidavit that surveillance footage showed Thompson and Gonzalez walking together and having an argument before the shooting. The disturbing video showed Thompson attacking Gonzalez and attempting to place her in a chokehold but she pushes him off. As they continue walking together, Thompson pulls out a gun and shoots her in the head. He fired several more shots before Gonzalez fell to the ground.

The document says Thompson most likely impregnated his girlfriend and was upset because he disapproved of the abortion. He was charged with her murder and reportedly faces a charge of assault of a household member as reported by Jezebel. Abortions are banned in Texas after six weeks except in the case of a medical emergency.

He was booked into the Dallas County Jail and remains in custody. The Dallas Police Department said in a statement that an investigation into Gonzalez’s death is ongoing. Twitter users responded to the case and said it is a prime example of intimate partner violence in addition to the harmful impacts of the abortion ban in Texas. One user wrote, “70 women every month are shot and killed by an intimate partner. In the case of Gabriella Gonzalez, her murder is especially egregious and tied indirectly to the anti-abortion laws in Texas. How many more women will be killed for exercising choice?”

Another tweeted, “Ending gun violence is reproductive justice. Ending gun violence is gender justice. And vice versa. Our movement needs to be intersectional and bold if we are going to change this country. This is an unacceptable tragedy that has been made possible by hateful legislators.”
