Texas Gov. Reopens Businesses & Schools After Highest Single Day Jump In COVID-19 Cases
As Texas saw its highest single-day jump in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Greg Abbott reopens more schools and businesses like child care centers, bars, bowling alleys, rodeos, massage and personal-care centers, bingo centers. and more.
On Saturday (May 16), the state reported 1,801 new coronavirus infections, its highest single-day increase. However, Abbott says he expects the numbers to increase as the state’s begun to increase testing in “most high-risk areas: nursing homes, meatpacking plants and jails.”

Meanwhile, after relaxing the stay-at-home order on May 1, Abbott continues to relax it further as of this week. Including the aforementioned businesses, as of Friday (May 22), restaurants will be allowed to increase capacity to 50%, Bars and breweries, 25% and gyms at 25%. As of Monday afternoon, Texas had 48,640 total cases with 1,344 deaths.
Furthermore, Abbott says, “Today, tomorrow and every day going forward is one day closer to medical discoveries that will help treat and protect people from getting Covid-19. Until that day comes, our focus is to keep you safe while also restoring your ability to get back to work, to open your businesses, to pay your bills, to put food on your tables.”
