Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is speaking out and addressing backlash she received after calling Texas’ wheelchair-bound Governor Greg Abbott, “Governor Hot Wheels.”
On Tuesday (March 25), clips began circulating showing Crockett speaking at a banquet in Los Angeles. The Democratic Representative stood on stage at a podium at a Human Rights Campaign dinner on Saturday (March 22).
Crockett said, “We in these hot a** Texas streets, honey. Y’all know we got Gov. Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now. And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-a**s mess, honey.”
Rep. Jasmine Crockett Claims She ‘Wasn’t Thinking About’ Gov. Greg Abbott’s Condition Regarding ‘Hot Wheels’ Comment
Jasmine Crockett drew backlash on social media as Governor Greg Abbott was paralyzed in 1984 after a tree fell on him while he was running. The accident severely damaged Abbott’s spinal cord. Abbott, now 67, was elected in 2014. Crockett, who was elected to the House in 2022, was roundly criticized by Republicans for the comments.
She eventually spoke out on Tuesday afternoon to deny mocking the governor. She said she was not referring to his condition. In a post on X, she wrote:
“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition. I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable. Literally, the next line I said was that he was a ‘Hot A** Mess,’ referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump — a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities — are now outraged.”
