Javion Thomas was on his way back to campus when he noticed one of his friends needed assistance with a stalled vehicle on Culver Street in Commerce. The university’s executive director of marketing and communications said in a statement that the incident occurred shortly after Thomas attempted to push the vehicle.

His aunt, Veronica Lynch-Davis, said Thomas had a back injury before the accident and was struck by the car after the group lost control. He died from the injuries sustained from the accident on Tuesday.

“He was the one who had major surgery on his spine, He was always wanting to help and willing to help. And at one time, because of his spine, he couldn’t help pick up things anymore and he hated it when he moved in because we had to help him. And that was not in his nature,” she told local radio station KRLD.

The university wrote in a statement that they have left the school’s flag at half-staff and offered counseling services to students. His mother, Tracci Lynch, wrote in a Facebook statement that her son was an organ donor and always lent out a helping hand for those in need.

“You touched and changed so many lives. Your strength throughout your life and how you handled your adversities in life proves that God has made you different from the rest.”
