A new trend has emerged where teens in the Durgapur region of West Bengal reportedly use flavored condoms to get high.

The technique involves placing the flavored contraceptive in hot water and letting it soak until the polyurethane is released. This leads to a cocktail that can give a high lasting approximately 12 hours. According to Insider, plastic is used for everyday materials such as car parts, adhesives, and building insulation. However, the condom is left to soak in hot water for six to eight hours before an individual drinks the water.
It has become an addicting substance amongst the town’s youth and is reportedly sold three to four times daily in local stores.”Condoms contain aromatic compounds. It breaks down to form alcohol. It is addictive. This aromatic compound is also found in dendrites glue. So many people use dendrite for addiction also,” said Dheemsn Mandal, an employee at the Durgapur Divisional Hospital.
“None of this has yet been proven with a practical experiment. But it is believed that ethylene glycol, a kind of alcohol, is produced when the polyurethane breaks down after boiling flavored condoms in water and [keeping them aside] for six to eight hours,” Udayan Basak explained to Vice.

There are also consequences of consuming plastic due to the numerous health risks. If an individual continuously consumes polyurethane. it can impact their lungs, kidneys, and the body’s nervous system. “Long-term use of this can lead to mental abnormalities, including violent behavior, unconsciousness, and [in certain cases] even death,” said Sanjith Saseedharan, lead of the critical care at the SL Raheja Hospital.
“Like sanitizers, cou gh syrups, and nail polish removers, flavored condoms can be bought over the counter at any medical store. A drug of this kind can give a high for up to 12 hours when used in large quantities.”
The new trend stuns social media users as it is not new for people to use different materials to feel euphoric.
People have found ways to get high for centuries despite their numerous health risks.
The bizarre trend may have startled society but no reports is stating if it will become a new thing in other countries.
