The victim was identified as Valentina Orellana-Peralta but her cause of death was not disclosed by the L.A. County Coroner’s Office. During an investigation, the LAPD believes the teen was struck by an officer’s bullet that shot into the wall of a dressing room where she was located.

“One of the rounds apparently struck a wall behind the suspect and behind that wall was a fitting room, and inside there, tragically was this 14-year-old girl and her mother,” said LAPD Chief Michel Moore to Eyewitness News.

However, it is unclear if the suspect who was also killed during the shooting was armed with a gun. The news outlet also reported that a victim who was assaulted by the suspect was seen with a bloodied face. Investigators believe she was hit with a metal object but a gun was not recovered at the scene.

Moore also offered their condolences to the family of the slain teen.

“This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved,I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl’s life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family.”
