Kelly Wellman-Rich,34, and her husband Jeffrey,36, were arrested and charged earlier this week after it was discovered they provided alcohol and marijuana to the teen and had sex with him.  Wellman-Rich was a teacher for the Lafayette Parish School system but it is unclear which school she worked for. Officers charged her with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile, and contributing to their delinquency.

Jeffrey was charged with an accessory of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. The couple was both released on bond. Investigators reported that an anonymous witness told them that the couple was hosting the male foreign exchange student in their home and Wellman-Rich had sex with him consistently.

The school district said in a statement that they are aware of the case and will cooperate with the police.

‘The Lafayette Parish School System is aware of the allegations of inappropriate conduct by one of our employees. Allegations of this nature will continue to be taken very seriously and will be thoroughly investigated. Never will alleged inappropriate conduct of an employee be taken lightly.  LPSS is fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation. Because this is a personnel matter, no further information will be provided.’

Foreign exchange student organization Pan Atlantic said they are working with the student and his family to ensure his safety.

‘We have been working with the student, the student’s natural family and all stakeholders to ensure the student’s safety, and the privacy of all concerned.’
