Target Pulls Chaokoh Coconut Milk After PETA Accuses Brand Of Forced Monkey Labor

Target has stopped selling Chaokoh Coconut Milk after animal rights advocacy group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) accuses the brand of forced monkey labor.

On Monday (Jan. 25), a statement released by PETA USA and Asia reveals undercover investigations showed the allege use of captive monkeys in Thailand’s coconut-picking industry. While the initial investigation “found cruelty to monkeys” on each farm and training facility; further details included animals allegedly being force to pick coconuts and perform for tourists, and having animals chained to tires and/or kept in small cages.

PETA’s executive VP Tracy Reiman said, “By dropping Chaokoh, Target is joining thousands of stores that refuse to profit from chained monkeys’ misery. PETA exposés have confirmed that Thai coconut producers are exploiting monkeys and lying about it, so there’s no excuse for any grocery store to keep Chaokoh on its shelves.” It’s stated that Target joins more than 26,000 stores—including chains Wegmans, Costco, Food Lion, and Stop & Shop—that have cut ties with coconut milk brands abusing monkeys.
