Lewis Hamilton Tests Positive For COVID-19

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One champion has become the latest athlete to test positive for COVID-19. As a result, Hamilton will miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.

According to Hamilton’s Mercedes team, the 35-year-old driver tested negative three times last week but had mild symptoms on Monday and then tested positive for the virus.

“He up woke Monday morning with mild symptoms and was informed at the same time that a contact prior to arrival in Bahrain had subsequently tested positive,” the team said in a statement. “Lewis, therefore, took a further test and returned a positive result. This has since been confirmed by a retest. Apart from mild symptoms, he is otherwise fit and well, and the entire team sends him its very best wishes for a swift recovery.” Hamilton, who is currently quarantining in Bahrain, also took to social media to announced the sad news and to express his disappointment in testing positive:

“I’m devastated that I won’t be racing this weekend,” Hamilton wrote. “Since we started the season in June, my team and I have been taking all the precautions we possibly can and following the regulations everywhere we’ve been in order to stay safe.”

According to CBS sports, the Mercedes team is planning to announce a replacement driver later this week. Hamilton needs to have a negative COVID-19 test in order to return to the track.

Lewis Hamilton Investigated For Breonna Taylor Tribute At Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton could face some hefty fines because  he’s currently being investigated for wearing a shirt in support of arresting Breonna Taylor’s killers while at the Tuscan Grand Prix over the weekend.

As of now officials are discussing whether his attire violated the sport’s “no political statement” rule.

The black t-shirt said, “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” in pink on the front, and the words, “Say her name” on the back, along with an image of Breonna. As we reported, 26-year-old Taylor was shot dead by Louisville, KY police in March. The cops have still not been arrested.

Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about racism in the U.S and U.K, adding that he’s surrounded by white men in his profession.

“I’m in a sport which is white-dominated and there is very little diversity, for example. And with everything that happened in the states, it really brought up a lot of emotions for me.”

“A lot of people think it is only happening in the states. Yes, there is the police brutality in the states but systemic racism is across the world.”
