The news site reports that the misdemeanor charges were officially dismissed Tuesday against Miss Cooper. A judge granted Manhattan prosecutors’ request to toss Cooper’s case after she completed five therapy sessions “designed for introspection and progress,” Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said at a brief virtual hearing.
“They sent her to Critical Therapy Center … who provided psychoeducation and therapy services which focused on the ways in which Ms. Cooper could appreciate that racial identities shape our lives but we cannot use them to harm ourselves or others,” Illuzzi-Orbon told Manhattan Criminal Court Justice Anne Swern. “Psychoeducation about racial equality is woven into each therapy session to prompt understanding and reflection,” the New York Post quotes.
“Having completed 5 sessions, Ms. Cooper’s therapist reported that it was a moving experience and that Ms. Cooper learned a lot in their sessions together,” Illuzzi said. The judge granted the prosecution’s motion to dismiss the charge.
Christian Cooper (no relation to Amy Cooper) did not want to press charges but the Manhattan DA alleged that Amy Cooper “engaged in racist criminal conduct.” In a statement on Twitter Tuesday, Cooper’s lawyer Robert Barnes thanked the DA’s office for dismissing the charges against her.
