As previously reported, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland agreed to sell Verzuz to Triller in January 2021. However, their lawsuit claims the social networking platform defaulted on the deal after making two payments. In response to the failed financial plan, Swizz and Timbaland are suing for more than $28 million plus interest, as reported by TMZ.
Triller has yet to release a statement regarding the suit, but this is not the first time the company has faced legal issues. In 2020, the company promised to pay $14 million to 300 Black creators if they switched from TikTok. The creators said they have yet to see any funds from the platform.

“Triller and our partners are supporting Black creators as a way to deepen the pipeline of Black-created content and to ensure that Black creators have a seat at the table in the digital advertising revolution. The market opportunity for brands and advertising to tap into some of the most dynamic and culture-setting creative talent is massive, and the brands that lean furthest into the Black creator economy will be the winners,” said CEO Mahi de Silva.
The company also promised to pay the creators $4,000 per month despite being forced to continue creating content based on the platform’s standards.
Social media reacts to the lawsuit, some believe Verzuz should have stayed within the culture
News of the lawsuit started trending on Twitter and other social media spaces, where many believed Swizz and Timbaland should’ve kept VERZUZ within the culture. Additionally, the conversation also brought up Triller’s alleged failure to pay Black creators.
Triller has yet to release a statement regarding the lawsuit and the other issues about Black creators.
