Surfing star Mikala Jones has tragically passed away at age 44. It is reported that the surfer had a freak accident, which was caused by a surfboard fin leaving a gash near his groin, busting an artery.

The surf world is left without one of its stars after Hawaii native Mikala Jones experienced a fatal surf injury on Sunday (July 9) at the Awera Resort in North Sipora, Indonesia. It is said that while Jones was surfing in the country’s Mentawai Islands, he suffered an injury that allegedly severed his femoral artery, causing a fatal loss of blood.
According to reports, Jones experienced a freak accident when the fin of his surfboard appeared to cause a big gash near his left groin. Medical personnel is said to have raced to assist the surfer, and quickly had him rushed to the hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead from his injuries.
At a young age, Jones came to love the world of surf. He eventually perfected his craft and would gain notoriety for his ability to ride through massive tubes in dangerous conditions. Jones also gained fame for how he filmed his tube-riding. He was also acknowledged by ‘Surfline‘ as “one of the 21st Century’s most photogenic surfers.”

Taking to Instagram, Jones’ daughter, Isabella, shared a touching message as she grieved her father’s death. On Sunday (June 9), she wrote, “I’m in so much disbelief right now, this doesn’t feel real. I love you so much dad and i wish i could give you one last hug. I wish i could tell you again how much i love you and thank you for being the best dad. I wish you were still here with us, you weren’t supposed to leave yet. This is too soon. I know you are in a good place now with nana vi, and your friends.
I wish this never happened and we could just wake up and go surf together tomorrow morning. I’m not sure how to put this in words, but my dad got into a bad surfing accident and didn’t make it. I’m happy he was doing what he loved the most. Life will never be the same without you. I miss you so much, I would do anything to get one more moment, even if it was us arguing and then laughing our a**es off.
Thank you for teaching me so many life lessons, and always being there for me. I wish you were still here with us right now. I will always be think about you dad ❤️ I love you so much, thank you for everything ❤️ fly high 🕊️ ur a f***ing legend.”

Also taking to Instagram to mourn his passing was Hawaii-based surf photographer, Brian Bielmann. He said, “I put on the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys album Smile, I made a cup of coffee and sat down to make this really sad sad post. Our friend Mikala Jones passed away yesterday in The Mentawais while surfing the waves he loved.. I’m so sorry and send prayers to his family.
He was 44 which is far too young. He was a wonderful person an incredible artist, his Go pro photos were mind blowing. …. We’re gonna miss him so much. I’ve been sitting her all morning trying to grasp this reality . We all will pass on but it’s so shocking when it’s so unexpected like this. What he packed into his 44 years was astounding. He lived a great life was loved by many and will never be forgotten. He left this world a beautiful soul can any of us ask to live a better life than that .Aloha Mikala We love you buddy.”
