Wow! The Supreme Court is barring affirmative action programs in the college admissions process, essentially ruling that race can no longer be a factor in admitting students.

The decision — which is being hailed as a major victory for conservative activists — took effect at the University of North Carolina and Harvard University.

The court ruled that affirmative action programs at both schools violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, deeming them unlawful. It is reported that on Thursday (June 29), the decision was made in a 6-3 vote in the UNC case and 6-2 vote in the Harvard case, where liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was recused.

Speaking on the decisions, she wrote that the ruling was “truly a tragedy for us all.” Another liberal justice, Sonia Sotomayor, who’s also the first Hispanic justice, wrote that the court “stands in the way and rolls back decades of precedent and momentous progress.”

Elsewhere, former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke out and said, “It wasn’t perfect, but there’s no doubt that it helped offer new ladders of opportunity for those who, throughout our history, have too often been denied a chance to show how fast they can climb.”

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has ruled that this is a “great day for America,” as other prominent conservatives insist that the Constitution should be “colorblind.” With this new ruling, it is reported that the Supreme Court effectively overturned the 2003 ruling Grutter v. Bollinger.

In this case, the court then said that race could be considered a factor in the admission process because universities had maintained compelling interest in ensuring their campuses were diverse.

When the 2003 ruling had taken effect, it in-turn threw out decades of precedent, which included one 1978 ruling that upheld a limited consideration of race when it came to college admissions; this as it was a way to fight historic discrimination against Black people and other people of color/minorities.
