Starbucks To Allow Employees To Wear Black Lives Matter Attire & Accessories After Backlash

#Socialites, get into this! On Thursday, it was reported that an internal memo was sent to Starbucks employees, warning staffers against wearing accessories or clothes bearing messages in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In the memo obtained by BuzzFeed News, it reminded staffers that such messages are prohibited under the company’s policy against accessories that “advocated a political, religious or personal issue.” The company’s move caused massive outrage and even had social media users encouraging each other not to spend their money there.

Following the big wave of backlash, Starbucks announced on Twitter Friday that it will now allow their employees to wear #BlackLivesMatter merch in support of the movement. The tweet read:

“Black Lives Matter. We continue to listen to our partners and communities and their desire to stand for justice together. The Starbucks Black Partner Network co-designed t-shirts with this graphic that will soon be sent to 250,000+ store partners,” adding, “Our partners (employees) told us that they need a way to express themselves at work and we heard them. They may now wear Black Lives Matter t-shirts, pins and name tags.

The company linked a blog post for customer to learn more about this change.

The Black Lives Matter movement has gone mainstream amid the nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.
