In a statement shared to Billboard along with several outlets, U.K. label Transgressive and Sophie’s publicist, Ludovica Ludinatrice, confirmed the news saying the musician, whose full name was Sophie Xeon, died in the early hours of Saturday morning: “Tragically, our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident,” in the Greek capital of Athens, the statement said. “True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell.” The statement added that the producer was “a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the last decade. Not only for ingenious production and creativity but also for the message and visibility that was achieved. An icon of liberation.”
“At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for her fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.” The Scottish artist had worked with stars likes Madonna and Charli XCX. Tributes have been pouring in all over social media from the LGBT community and fellow musicians like singer Sam Smith, rapper Cupcakke and more:
