Yikes! A social media war has been waged as Vice President Kamala Harris continues to be labeled as a “DEI hire” (meaning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) for President Joe Biden, with many users calling the phrase “the new n-word.”
Since making her way into office as the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris has been targeted for her skin color and has even been called a DEI hire or affirmative action hire for President Joe Biden. As the Biden-Harris Administration heads into re-election for the 2024 term (against Donald Trump for the second time), Biden has not only been dragged for his age and accused of dementia but his running mate, Harris, is being attacked for being equally “slow” or “dumb,” and is constantly referred to as a “DEI hire.”
Within the last week, social media has been calling Kamala Harris a DEI hire for Joe Biden, with a particular article from the New York Post going viral and sparking tons of debates and discourse. In the article written by writer Charles Gasparino, Harris is labeled as “The country’s first DEI president if [she] finds her way to the top of the Democratic ticket while Joe Biden wilts away as the party’s presidential nominee after his horrific debate performance.”

The article has since gone über-viral and several people, politicians, and more have reacted, including Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, which is where Kamala Harris was born and raised and previously served as the 32nd Attorney General and junior U.S. Senator.
Newsom took to X (formerly Twitter) and condemned the New York Posts’ article stating, “1. Joe Biden is our next President. 2. This is straight-up racist.” Responding to the California Governor, one social user wrote, “Kamala Harris was literally selected as VP because she is Black and a woman. But don’t take my word for it. Biden said it himself.” The user continued to share headlines that read, “Biden Vows To Select A Woman As His Running Mate,” and “Biden Says Four Black Women Are On His VP List But Won’t Commit To Choosing One.”

Another user followed up and shared a video of then Presidential Candidate Joe Biden telling CNN his plan to appoint a Black woman as SCOTUS Justice and select a woman as VP (did not say Black woman). Another user summarizing the back-and-forth wrote, “Biden: I am picking Kamala Harris because of DEI. Conservatives: Kamala Harris is a DEI Pick. Liberals: CONSERVATIVES ARE RACIST. HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT?!”
Other users continued to take up for Kamala Harris and defend her against the label of being a “DEI hire” for President Joe Biden, a label that is being called “the new n-word.” Several users continued to bring up Harris’ merits and accomplishments she achieved before being named as Vice President.
Others then questioned why they aren’t labeling Barack Obama as a “DEI hire” like Kamala Harris and one person claimed, “Obama wasn’t a DEI President because he won his merit. A generational talent. Kamala failed to win a single primary but got the VP nod anyway, failing upward. That was not due to any brilliant ideas, but blatantly due to her race and gender.”
